Alcohol Rehab

On Saturday night of 22nd. July 1995 I drank my last drink, took long walks the next day looking for another, spent the longest Sunday night of my life sober & went into rehab on Monday. I used the next nine months planning & scheming a new life that I knew I had the moment I locked the door on the home which would never be home again. The only indispensable carry-with-me was the inevitable New Age six year old kid who treated the whole escapade like an adventure on a bomb site.

Looking now at the scraps, they’re worth keeping. Elsewhere there are more than scraps. I kept two photo albums of two last holidays—New York in 1989 when I was in my last prime & about to gather apace downhill & Seville in 1992 when I knew the game was up. When I arrived in rehab I wrapped them both in newspaper & secured with duck tape; that way they’ve stayed. I might do the same with the scraps—sufficiently secure against casual glances & involuntary ‘If-only’s’ but still around as evidence of a fall & a getting back. I’m secure about how things were & how they’re part of what is here now. Arranging them is a pastime & a play; essential for continuing health.

THE MONKEY IS NEVER FAR AWAY

THOSE WHO HAVE DRANK VODKA EVERYDAY FOR YEARS…know that quitting is not a piece of cake, but there are those who will state that it was nothing, nothing at all, "just woke up one day and said, it’s over, and that was that." If that was the case, more power to you, my friend, you are a most powerful individual. But there are others who know that getting the monkey off one’s back is not, or was not, an easy chore.
